Salida’s Storied Past: A Glimpse into the History That Shaped Our Mountain Town

There’s a reason Salida doesn’t just feel like another mountain town—it’s got soul. Walk down F Street, and you’re not just passing cute shops and coffee spots; you’re walking through history. From its railroad days to its wild-west reputation, Salida’s past is woven into its charm today.

If you’re new to the area (or even a longtime local who’s curious), here’s a look at some of the stories that make Salida special.

Salida Was a Railroad Town First
Founded in 1880 as a division point for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, Salida quickly became a hub for transportation and commerce. Trains brought workers, goods, and opportunity—and you can still see remnants of this era in the old rail yards and station houses.

The Fire of 1888 Changed Everything
A devastating fire swept through Salida in January 1888, destroying 60+ buildings. But it also led to the creation of many of the beautiful brick structures you see downtown today, including the iconic Palace Hotel. From ashes to architecture—Salida rebuilt with pride.

From Mining Town to Creative District
Salida’s roots are rugged, but it’s also always been a place of reinvention. As mining declined, art and culture took its place. In 2012, Salida became Colorado’s first Certified Creative District, and it shows in every mural, gallery, and live music set you stumble across.

History You Can Still Feel
Take a stroll through Riverside Park. Visit the Salida Museum. Pop into a local bookstore and pick up a copy of “Salida: The Early Years.” History isn’t tucked away here—it’s alive in the brickwork, the storytelling, and the people.
