If you've driven down 3rd Street in Salida, you've passed a piece of local history. The flooring shop now known as Hylton Home traces its roots all the way back to the original First Street Flooring, established in 1910. More than a century later, it's still here, still local, and still helping people in this valley turn a house into a home.
A lot has happened in those hundred-plus years. The business was revived in 2006 and moved to its current spot on 3rd Street in 2008. In December 2022, Philip Sterling and Greg Kenny, both deeply connected to this community, took the reins and brought it under the Hylton Home name, operating alongside Hylton Lumber. The name on the door is newer, but the commitment behind it is the same one that's served Chaffee County for generations.
More than just flooring
Walk into their showroom at 301 W. 3rd Street and you'll find a lot more than carpet samples. Hylton Home offers hardwood, laminate, vinyl, carpet, and tile, along with window coverings, windows, and doors. But what sets them apart is the help that comes with it. Their team offers design guidance and project management, so whether you're building new, renovating, or tackling a weekend DIY project, you're not left to figure it out alone. They also handle expert installation through trusted local contractor partners, which means the details get done right.
Why local matters here
Big-box stores will always advertise a lower sticker price. What they can't offer is a team that shows up for community events, stands behind their work, and treats their reputation as something personal. That's the difference Hylton Home leans into, and it's exactly the kind of business that makes Salida feel like Salida.
If you're planning a project, whether it's a single room or a whole-home renovation, it's worth stopping by the showroom on 3rd Street to see what's possible. Supporting a business with this much history in our town is a pretty good bonus too.
